Get around the city

Having a car is not needed in Avignon. With its narrow streets, one-way and pedestrian areas, the city center is not really "friendly car." From the apartment, the main tourist and cultural sites of Avignon are within walking distance . Furthermore , the municipality has recently developed green and very practical alternative to explore the city. Here are a few of them:

Exploring the surroundings

By Train

There are two train station in Avignon: 1. Avignon Center CIty station (mostly for regional and national "regular" train lines) 2. The TGV station, about 10-12 min from city center by car (mostly for High Speed Train lines).

"La Virgule" is a train shuttle that links both stations within about 5 min,

If, of course, not all the touristic sites are accessible by train, many of them are, and you can do without it (and the parking "burden") to visit Arles (18 minutes), Orange (15 minutes), Aix-en-Provence (TGV, 20 minutes), Nîmes (30 minutes), Marseille (TGV, 29 minutes) and many other destinations around.

Hiring a car

There are many Car Rental companies agencies in Avignon. pAs far as I am concerned, I tend to use most often one of the three I listed here, but I can't say which one I would prefer, nor than other are not good ones.

Note: AVIS has an agency located in the City Center Station (others are rather alocated at the TGV station).. If you go for this one, you might try to negociate to park the car in their parking (it's a 10 min walk from the apartments) while not in use.

Parking a car in Avignon Historical Center

As is most often the case in Avignon "Intra-Muros", there are no garage or parking attached to the apatments. Here are three options we suggest::

  1. Except in July (Theater Festival), one can find available parking places (metered) in the streets around.  But you may have to go round in circle before you find one.
  2. Our guests usually opt for one of the two large free parking located outside of the city walls. Both offer a shuttle service that takes you in the city center every 15 minutes
    • The Parking "des Italiens", along the city center walls, is  the closest (15 minute walk), or 5 minutes with the cityzen shuttle that drops you very close to the apartments (~5 min).
    • The Parking "de l'Ie Piot" (on the Isle located just across the Rhone) is another solution. With 650 seats, it is the best option during the busiest periods. The shuttle takes in 5 minutes you "Porte de l'Oulle".
  3. You can also opt for one of the private parking listed here (with rates)
